"On this subject, let's hear it from painter-cum-writer, Marek Halter: 'Pollock understood that America was not just an extension of Europe, that America was vast and that this ought to be felt in painting.' Struck by this height in vantage point, which had less to do with pictorial technique than with the new-fangled aeronautical technology of the Wright Brothers, Halter goes on: 'Pollock is the first painter to abandon the easel and place the canvas on the ground in order to take in the painting from above. It's like a landscape seen from a plane. European paintings are landscapes seen from the window of a train.'(..) But, here, the artistic achievement of Jackson Pollock and a whole host of others, is a scopic turning back to face the terrestrial surface. (..) And so the the art for art's sake of a disunited Europe was overtaken, in the immediate post-war years, by the performance for performance's sake of American DRIPPING PAINT (Action Painting) à la Pollock, anticipating, for the end of the century, the eternal return of an orbital circulation whereby aero- and astro-nautics were to merge in a 'mannerism' that no longer speaks its name."
