Padam, Jochen Lempert, padam!

Mores (Germany), 1958. Lives and works in Hamburg. Lempert initially trained as a biologist at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn during the 1980s, while simultaneously studying experimental film-making with the Schmelzdahin Film Group. His photographs combine artistic creation, scientific research and documentation, and take the animal world in its many forms as their subject. Using a cultural approach, he employs his analytical gaze to re-write natural phenomena. His artistic production, which varies between extreme close-ups and long-distance views, encompasses single images framed in a uniform way, which are combined to form a series. Reflecting the human need for interpretation, and playing with our constant search for signs and symbols, meaning is often generated through the process of association between the individual images.
